Gwanyo, an institution that made porcelain used in the royal court during the Joseon Dynasty.
-
Most of the famous traditional Korean pottery that we are familiar with are said to have been made here. The institution called 'Gwanyo' was based here in Icheon and made porcelain for the Joseon Dynasty for 500 years. At the end of the 19th century, with the fall of the Joseon Dynasty, the warmth of the space that had continued for hundreds of years disappeared into history, leaving only the remains of the kiln.
-
And Gwangju, a brand that has continued the tradition of porcelain. Founded in 1963, it has been protecting our own by collecting artisans and restoring the ascending kiln to carry on the tradition of its own style. We know this brand better as the liquor 'Hwayo'.
-
Today's space where the kiln site is located is a unique space. An old masonry [brick house] building with a chimney to suit its function. The eaves are made of Japanese-style tiles and in front of them, traditional Korean-style tiles are guarding the ascending kiln. The layout of the space seems to contain the story of history. What really stands out is this ascending kiln with our style accentuated. In front of it, there is a brand exhibition hall listing the history and achievements of Gwangjuyo, a shop selling porcelain made here in front, and a cafe remodeled from an old building in the main building. The biggest window and main space of the cafe emphasize the scene by opening the front window so that this ascending kiln can be seen clearly. It is also impressive that the cross section of the huge chimney remains in the space to protect and inform the model of this place. The height of the ceiling and the appreciation of the structure are quite attractive as it is a steel structure rather than a wooden structure.
-
There is a lot to see in the space. You don't notice the passing of time by ordering a cup of coffee and looking at the brand's exhibits and vessels. Considering the wide seats and the spacious seating plan, the empty one side like an oriental painting suits this place very well. Thought. I took a long step to Icheon, Gyeonggi-do. The road to this space hidden in the corner after enduring the boring subway was boring, but now, rather than boring, weren't you enjoying a short novel with a narrative? Think and finish writing.
