Editorial: Korean Modern Mirror - Is it not? Is it a department store? Does it matter? Of course, in architecture, a discipline dealt with by spatialists, the programmatic plan type of 'mall' and 'department store' is different. To put it simply, a 'mall' is 'I will sell things based on my experience.' where it is called. However, as I said before [refer to Namyangju space 1], department stores should no longer sell only products. In the Corona era, there are not many things that can be consumed offline other than experiences. - More importantly, “Is it important to act according to your name in modern society?” - Mall like water, department store like department store? Is it really a spatial story that represents modern society? It seems not. Isn't an open mind that can express the difference of one 'person' rather than forcing an action under the name, is the behavior appropriate for this era? and start the story. - This space is a project that started 15 years ago. British architect Sir Richard Rogers was in charge of the basic design. [The first plan was a mall.] Sir Rogers is a very famous architect. If you have been to France, you may have recognized the 'Center Pompidou' while looking for a place to travel. You 'Renzo Piano' and the person who designed it. Since then, he is also very famous as the person who designed the 'Lloyd's' Center in England. Teacher Lee's characteristic is 'architecture through technology'. Commonly referred to as 'high-tech architecture'. However, what he wants is not technology that swallows up the world, but an architecture in a responsible position in which technology considers society for humans and the environment at the same time. That is the goal Sir Rogers and his companions dream of. - What's more, high-tech architecture can give you a degree of freedom inside a space by using a structure. In today's space, 'The Hyundai Seoul', that red crane seen on the outside of the building is actually a structure that lifts the ceiling of the building. The structure made it possible to have no columns in the space. If you think about our existing department stores, you can easily see the difference. It is also a place that does not pay much attention to the sense of space because it is a place to simply buy things. It has always been a principle for department stores to visually show many brands as they go up by placing a vertical movement line between the ends and the center based on the center of the floor. At the same time, I don't drill the windows so I don't know when I came in and how much time has passed. Many of you may not have known, but this is the same story as the 'guk rule' of a department store that has been accepted as common sense by space geeks for a long time. But what about today's space? It is a place called Hyundai Department Store, but it is not. - You can freely design the interior of the space thanks to the huge structure that lifts the ceiling and opens the interior space freely [open plan: called open plan]. At the same time, light falls from the sky to the first floor through a light ceiling. In order to provide a pleasant park experience regardless of the season by bringing Yeouido Park inside, the huge slabs and interior elements provide a comfortable space even if it takes up space to sell services or goods [this is a place that is focused on F&B]. There is. Even the background music is 'birds and water sounds'. This is a design proposal to try to make the most of the experience possible in this day and age. This is not a department store, but more like a 'mall' if you are to judge the type. - Then, is there a movie theater like the 'mall'? Do you have an arcade? It is not. So, to be clear, this is neither a 'mall' nor a 'department store'. - We know it as 'Hyundai Department Store', but the word 'department store' is not on the nameplate they hung. - 'The Hyundai Seoul' - This is the official name. Modern society is like that. I don't know. However, these days, reading the times and saying, 'I wanted to do this!', new things are bursting out. It's a world where unique specialists get more attention than generalists. It is the modern age to try to accept new things without prejudice and to consume them freely. In this context, the Hyundai Department Store that prepared this space is the result of close communication with Sir Richard Rogers and the Office of General Architects and Engineers to create something new. - Where do you see this is a department store? I've never heard of a small coffee shop near Seongsu-dong Market that was in a department store. But here it is. A culture recognized by the public, which started on the street, is entering a super-large retail space called a high-end market. The story of the brands brought in by focusing on the experiences that the current MZ generation focuses on, and the spatial solution that tried to give a new experience by accepting the brands without any restrictions deserves applause. - Although, considering that this project was not posted on Sir Rogers' company website, there are uncomfortable facts about reality as a space artist. Wouldn't it have a small meaning in that the spatial element he was aiming for met with the Korean times and created something different? - Like this, a name is now just a name. Society promises to be called that, but society doesn't force you how to behave. It cannot be said that two people with the same name should do the same thing. So, I want to tell everyone who reads today's story. - “I want you to love and buy what you want to do regardless of the name.” - This is Korea's modern mirror #TheHyundaiSeoul. - Location _ Yeouido The Hyundai Seoul - Parking lot - Business hours _ Weekends 10:30-20:30 Weekdays 10:30-20:00 Restaurant 10:30-22:00 Friday 10:30-20:30 - Design _ Rogers Stirk Harbor + Partners, Samwoo Architects & Engineers - PS.
