Kellogg's Eco Refill Station - Jamsil Lotte Mart (Zetaplex)
@eyesmag The Kellogg's Refill Station I visited after reading the editorial of Kim Jong-un.
Conclusion "There is still a long way to go to zero waste."
Recently, refill stations are popping up in various places such as E-Mart Sugar Bubble, Homeplus Zero Market, convenience stores, and co-living. The new collaboration between Nongshim Kellogg and Lotte Mart is about refilling food.
The advantages they offer are
1. Customers can put as many cereals as they want in the container they brought, weigh it, and print the barcode to pay.
2. 20% lower price than finished product
Disadvantages of visiting
1. It is difficult to purchase as much cereal as you want.
The refill station is actually just a serial dispenser. It is unfortunate that the weight cannot be known when pouring cereal in real time because it has to be placed on a scale to weigh it. Because it was still in the early stages, I couldn't control it myself, and the sales staff helped me, but I asked for around 500g, but they gave me 600g. I understand the error of about 10%, but the 20% is a little bit so, so I asked for correction, but I was embarrassed by the position that it was difficult to remove the swelling already. Like the meat and fish section, you can measure the scales and add more, but it was a pity that they didn't care about the weight. I think it's right to let them put it on their own. Since the unit price is so cheap, there is nothing you can do about it if you have to endure it.
2. It is difficult to feel that it is truly eco-friendly.
This project is being implemented in terms of reducing the use of disposable products, but at the same time, promotions are being conducted based on the purchase weight. If you purchase more than 500g, you will receive a free container. I felt that it was not in the right direction with the PR, 'It was only provided in large quantities, so it was suitable for single-person households such as Hon-jok and self-employed people who were hesitant to purchase cereal'. And when I asked for around 500g, I heard a chilling refusal that I had to purchase it at 6,000 won or more because the unit price of the gift was not right. It costs 8 to 13 won per gram, but it is 750 g to fill 6000 with the cheapest corn froth.
Isn't it eco-friendly to buy only as much food as you need and then throw it away when it becomes soggy? Of course, we understand that companies should consider profitability and increase Q through promotional events as the price is low. And it may be a problem that consumers can solve by buying only the amount they need without being swayed by promotions. However, since it is an eco-friendly project, I think it may be necessary to rethink the direction when considering the nudge effect through promotion. I am concerned that it will degenerate into green washing (false environmentalism) where consumers simply consume the image of being eco-friendly.
I like to use the refill method, so I support this challenge, and I hope that you plan a project that feels deeply concerned about the environment, rather than simply trying to be eco-friendly and riding on the trend.
*Happy new year, everyone!
