“Mutation in Order”
-
Today's urban form is a 'grid'. The grid is a grid pattern, and the grid is formed by orthogonal vertical and horizontal lines. The vertical and horizontal streets meet to form an intersection, and the remaining square faces provide a space for the building. Since the squares constituting the grid are expanded as one module, the scale of the space can be easily recognized and there is no wasted space, so it is efficient. In addition, there are no decorative elements, so it is simple. So, it was natural to apply a grid with rationality and efficiency to a large-scale space.
-
The method of composing a city in a grid system has been around for a long time. Egypt, China, Mexico, and Gyeongju in Korea also formed cities in a grid pattern. At that time, unlike now, the height of the building was low and the width of the road was narrow, so the space was composed of the so-called 'human scale'. Since the building did not fill all the places here, the current city and the city grid at that time may have the same shape, but the experience was completely different.
-
Now, the width of the road is widened, and the road divides the city, and the narrow road does not have enough parking space, so it threatens people by encroaching on the sidewalk. The buildings here have already lost their human scale and pierce the sky and swallow us up, so the current suffocating city does not give a good impression. It goes so far as to fill the vacant space with buildings. Not only does it feel stuffy, but the building erected like dominoes vertically and horizontally shows a human being possessed by a sense of obsession. It's time for a change in the city. Unfortunately, it is already too late to change the already planned and completed city. So, is there really nothing we can do about it?
-
Looking at 'Space K', there seems to be a slight possibility. This is a place that can be reached in about 5 minutes from Exit 2 of Magok Station. There is no natural arrangement around Magok Station in a typical grid format. In a city that is cold and stuffy and even depressing because there is no light at certain times, 'Space K' breathes life into the city.
-
It is at the intersection where the streets meet, receding as far back as possible and cutting the shape into a circle to provide a pleasant walking path for pedestrians. The movement line that climbs the ramp naturally and the parabolic staircase entrance that catches the eye creates a soft impression in the desolate city. The shelter, vegetable garden, and artwork on the roof naturally attract people, and on a fine day, imagining this place will be crowded with people will warm your heart. Here, the height of the building that is lower than the surrounding area becomes a point and even stands out more.
-
Visitors naturally go up to the rooftop to rest on the stairway plaza, and people who climb up the ramps provided outside can sit comfortably on the stairs and rest. Then ride the ramp that goes inside and walk around the museum. Although the number and size of the interior space are insufficient, people naturally circulate, so people flow through the building as blood flows through the body. So this place is like a living space. A building with such vitality appears like a guerrilla in the grid and shakes the stuffy city by installing a booby trap.
-
The grid was also easy to manage because it was efficient, rational, and easy to allocate and place space. So, in a city dealing with a large scale, its use may have been a natural choice. But with cars taking over the city and dense buildings threatening us, the grid needed a change. In such a situation, 'Space K' appeared like a mutant in order and gave us a chance to breathe, so I can't help but be happy.
-
* New York's Manhattan, which is represented as a grid city, is rightly the most stuffy city. However, the wide driveway does not distinguish between the neighborhoods, and small parks and huge Central Parks everywhere breathe air into the city. Therefore, if there are more open spaces such as 'Space k' where people can relax, gather, and form a community, even if it is not a building, wouldn't it be a good city to live in while maintaining efficiency and rationality?
