Hyundai Card Design Library
Jongno-gu, Seoul • Culture

The space was both disordered and natural, which appealed to me. The view I met after climbing the stairs showed a clear contrast of the interior and exterior. Dark bricks, bright interior finishes, a perfectly road-attached exterior that left no room for leisure, and an interior courtyard that left room for various activities painted a stark contrast. The undecorated exterior and the rectangular layout made me want to explore every corner of this place. Before even experiencing the interior, I knew this was not a public facility or your everyday place. As expected, it was a corporate space operated by Hyundai Card, and only those who have a Hyundai Card could enter - only a few times a month, at that. Nevertheless, as there was no admission fee and I had a card, I started to experience the space freely. The interior was crisp and clean. Looking at the hanok across the courtyard, chairs arranged to look at it, stairs with narrow enough width for a house, the third floor reminiscent of an attic, made me feel like I was in the house of a seasoned designer. There were books of architecture and design that he would have collected, from books that are now out of print to books that are so pricey, you wouldn't dare to buy them. Hyundai Card provides this service to its customers free of charge, making the experience exclusive and special. As a result, existing customers stick around, and those who want to try the experience end up getting a Hyundai Card. It's a win-win for the company. It's worth noting that back in 2012 when this concept was being introduced, not many places were making use of their spaces like this. Sadly, the Hyundai Card Travel Library in Gangnam has closed down. But, if more people visit the remaining libraries and more Hyundai Card Libraries begin to pop up in more places, wouldn't we be able to reclaim our lost leisure and thoughtfulness? This is the 'Hyundai Card Design Library'.
