One house, one garden: summer space
-
This is Ho Chi Minh, the economic city of Vietnam. Vietnam is a summer country with hot or very hot weather all year round. Coming to such a country, we can immediately see that the space is very different from Korea. Because there is only one season, the windows of buildings are usually thin or perforated to change to an awning for good shade and ventilation. The temperature here fluctuates between 14 and 34 degrees, so there is no problem with survival. In the case of Korea, it is easy to take -20 degrees in winter, so if there is a problem with windows or insulation in a space, it is so cold that it is difficult to survive. Moreover, summer often rises to 40 degrees, so space needs a lot of space to protect people from an annual temperature of 60.
-
After all, this is a summer country. As such, the space has a unique style. Today's space is a space that makes good use of the characteristics and strengths of the style. District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City [In Korea, it is good to think of it as 'Seongsu-dong 1']. There are many different districts in the city, but this is where the most economically powerful people live. As such, five-star hotels are concentrated here, and there are relatively well-prepared amenities for travelers to enjoy. And this space is also one of the 5 star hotels. Even if you look closely, the space is not a very old building, considering the history of this country. However, looking at the exterior of the space, one interesting thing can be noticed.
-
It can be seen that each presumed room has a different garden. The shape of the floor of this space is not an ordinary rectangle. With the hallway as the stem, the rooms are attached like side branches. Also, the structure of the room and the shape of the hallway change slightly as you go upstairs.
-
If you think of a 5-star hotel, you expect to experience a very large grand space before and after the lobby, but this place reflects the outdoor table culture here, and before entering the lobby, a huge grand space and 'bar, cafe' is shared. This entry space is also a strategic arrangement to serve as a meeting place or to quickly provide 'welcome tea' to guests who struggled to come. It's also wasteful to turn on air conditioning for temperature in a huge space, so you'll have to pass through the shaded outdoor grand space before going to the low-ceilinged lobby. A relatively small lobby. Check in and go up to your room. As a whole, I try to continue to take nature-friendly appreciation. As you can see from the exterior of the building, this place continues to draw the space with plants and trees as themes. Even the interior finish of the elevator is made of good wood, so even the brief moment you ascend, you feel a sense of mellow scent.
-
The corridor is connected to the outdoor space. This means, in effect, that the outside and the temperature are transferred inside. In a country where it's summer all year round, it would be a waste to have to use electricity every day to keep every space cool. The greatest advantage of architectural design is that form can create function. This is well applied here. Although the air is connected, it creates a flow of air through the corridors and windows and gives shade so that the temperature does not rise to a steaming temperature even on a hot day.
-
Passing through this hallway you will find a completely separate room. The room is completely independent of the hallway. This is our first lodging in Vietnam. The interior continues through the visible trees. It may not have been easy to use hardwood floors due to the nature of the hotel, but this is a wooden floor. Nature-friendly views from the trees on the floor and ceiling, and the outdoor spa attached to the room are in harmony with the garden. Although the author's room had only a very small garden, looking at the pictures of the other rooms, it was clear that each room had a special garden.
-
The season is also the reason why you can give each room a small garden. Because of the weather. Also, some rooms have a garden shade that prevents direct sunlight from entering the room. After all, this place is properly protecting the basic conditions that must be satisfied inside the space through the morphological functions of plants and spaces. This is their own space that is impossible in Korea.
-
Moreover, the urban scene created by the 'one house, one garden' style building is also beautiful.
