Behind Seoul Station, after getting out of Exit 4 of Chungjeongno Station, turn your head to the right and you will see an uphill road. As you walk up in that direction, you may feel as if time has stopped strangely, because the first corridor-style residential and commercial complex in Korea, 'St. Joseph's Apartment', is located where your eyes stay. The long-standing building that conforms to the topography has been protecting this place for over 50 years. The mills, cafes and restaurants on the first floor are crowded with people right after lunch time, and the apartment dwellers come out and chat with each other. The alleyway in front of the apartment quickly turned into a sarangbang.
-
If you turn your head to the left while looking curiously at the scene, you can see a stylish building that is familiar but unfamiliar and not alien to it, sitting on the ground with a gesture similar to that of St. Joseph's apartment. This is the 'Jungnim Warehouse' that I will introduce today.
-
Why is the name of the stylish building 'Jungnim Warehouse'? The answer to the question lies in the history of Jungnim-dong. Jungnim Market in Jungnim-dong, a market that was quite popular in Seoul, was a seafood market, and Jungnim Warehouse was an unauthorized board building built to store the goods of the Junglim Market. As the market declined, the annex building was established as an abomination of the neighborhood, but the perception of it as an abomination was only the gaze of strangers, and to the people living here, it was a precious space with a story that was responsible for their livelihood. Therefore, when trying to change this area as part of the urban regeneration project, buildings that were not connected to the existing context could not be installed. In order to preserve the memory of that time, the name was used as it is, and the shape of the building also tried to capture the appearance of Jungnim Warehouse at that time. So, if you compare it with the warehouse at that time, it looks like you are seeing brothers mixed with blood.
-
The newly created Jungnim Warehouse blends in well with the surroundings just like the original building. While adapting to the steep hill topography as in St. Joseph's apartment, the building was segmented into smaller sizes to create open spaces throughout. A step difference was given between the buildings to overcome the shortcomings of the topography, and a sliding door was installed on the first floor facing the alley to secure a sense of openness. Thanks to this, the interior feels spacious even though it is a small and narrow space. Some places have high floor heights and others have low floor heights and are located on a downhill road, so you can feel and see a different sense of space and scenery even on the same second floor.
-
Before visiting this place, I only saw the building in pictures and thought this way. It's the complacency of thinking, 'If it's going to cost a lot of money to build a new one, wouldn't it be better to build a bright and colorful building for urban regeneration?' If you walk down the alleyway between St. Joseph's apartment and Jungnim Warehouse, you can quickly see how narrow-minded your thoughts were from a stranger's point of view. The historical building that has endured for 50 years and the Jungnim Warehouse, where the history of the future will be written, face each other with respect and face each other, makes you think a lot.
