A new frontier between form and decoration
-
Space [architecture] is a study that finds the agreement between technology and art. In other words, it can be said that a consensus between reason and emotion is found. A long time ago, I was deeply moved by the words of a professor at the university, and it is a sentence deeply engraved in my heart. To what extent will we reach an agreement? If you look at only such a short sentence, only abstract thoughts come to mind. For example, to explain:
-
Skill and reason are functions in space. The essence of space is to protect people. Therefore, it is necessary to be safe from the threats or dangers that people face in life. Space was originally a place to shelter from natural disasters and protect personal safety. If we quote again the interview of 'Louise Barragan' among the stories told a long time ago, 'You should know that walls are originally designed to protect humans.' It is also often a story about the spatial environment in my stories. 'Is it possible to control the temperature change of a space in Korea, where there are four seasons?', 'Is noise adequately handled according to the purpose of the space?', 'Is an appropriate floor environment created according to the main purpose of using the space?', 'Is the building safe from any natural disasters? [Rescue]', 'Is the evacuation route well prepared in case of a fire?' There are many different conditions. I usually leave this as the default. And the things that are mostly restricted by building codes are these safety-related stories.
-
All of this is called 'technology and reason'.
-
Then, what is 'art and emotion'? Space has the essence of protecting humans, but at the same time, space becomes the main stage for living. If this focuses only on function and provides an emotionally bleak environment, it will literally become a living life. In that context, once again, to borrow the story of a space artist, there is this story. 'I believe in architecture with warm sensibility'. There is a functional reason called 'convenience', but there is also an emotional story related to the mind and body called 'comfort'. 'How much does it reflect one's taste?', 'Is it aesthetically beautiful?', 'Can I promote psychological stability?', 'Can I often witness beautiful scenes in my life and enjoy happiness?' These are stories such as
-
The contents summarized above are 'art and sensibility'.
-
Space is the result of the agreement between 'technology and art' and 'reason and sensibility'. Today's space is unusual, rather than an agreement between technology and art, it is a space that has reached its peak by finding a new path.
-
If the space is expressed as a movie, the appreciation of this space is 'It was not wasted time.'
-
Form is often understood as external. In fact, style is an external singularity that comes from the way the space was constructed in that era. In other words, things that play the role of structure or that have no choice but to do so due to the limitations of materials are stylized and created simultaneously in the past. For example, the 'Parthenon' in Athens [actually there is also a style for decorative things. Ex. Doris, Corinth, Ionian, etc.], 'Construction of colonies in Europe', 'Changes in window size for each floor according to the strength of stone structures and concrete in Europe' This includes 'outward image'.
-
However, the form is not unconditionally formed according to structural reasons. Sometimes, even if it is written decoratively, it is classified as a style. However, today's space has some structural understanding and the exterior of the building is reminiscent of a cafe on the outskirts of London. The face of a building built with bricks. The interior walls are also made of bricks. Literally, the face of the space is a masonry-style building. And the arched windows, which are often seen in the neighborhood, fit well into this space. The interior seems to have been brought directly from somewhere in Europe. It's also a very old-fashioned store. The owner's certificates are hung everywhere, and pictures of the Queen and Prince of England are laid out. Everything here is not for functional reasons. All are decorations. However, regardless of the urban context, seeing the face of the space and entering the space quickly makes you fall into the feeling that you are in another country. The wooden stairs, the color of the walls, and the creaking sound of the floor all seem to bring the synesthesia of the old space as it is.
-
Drawing people into the space through the exterior and interior, based on some structural understanding, and making them believe that it is real. It has risen to a point where no one can say that it is not real.
-
The scenes that you face when you go to the second floor are that it has been a while since you walked in from the entrance, so the feeling of being in another country is maximized regardless of the scenery outside the window. Although the floor, window, and ceiling are not functionally perfectly functional, the illusion realized through understanding of decoration and form is at this point, function is pushed to a distance and allows us to enjoy the space. There is no such thing as a very bad function. In general, we are prepared to avoid major problems. So maybe they have already made their own consensus somewhere in 'technology and art' and 'reason and sensibility' in their standards? Even with persuasive power, I can't help but admire him.
-
From my point of view, this is a new realm.

Moreover, bagels, the main purpose of this space, are delicious and pretty. Everything was thoroughly prepared.
