A place that unleashes “our taste” in the most luxurious and delicate way”
I found Onjieum, a restaurant I would like to visit on a regular basis, even on purpose. It is located behind the Blue House Sarangchae, and the view of Gyeongbokgung and Inwangsan from the seat is as memorable as the food. The view of nature in Seoul that can be seen through the window is something you can never enjoy in Gangnam, the battleground of the Korean restaurant scene, so we recommend you to walk a long way to fully experience Onjieum.
Onjieum serves traditional food that restores the original form of the food of the old royal family or the last family. However, if you follow tradition and authenticity, it will not be easy to attract customers. Because Korean food is the most familiar food to us, it is really difficult to feel special and new.
For this reason, many Korean contemporary dining restaurants choose to design their food based on Western recipes and dining culture, and then apply the color of Korean food on top of it. In this way, it presents a new taste and sensibility to us who are accustomed to Korean food, but I think it is a disappointing part to ask whether this is Korean food.
Of course, Onjieum does not mean sticking to only our recipes and our shape. Chef Seongbae Park, who leads Onjieum, has a long experience in Japanese cuisine, so there are some nuances of Japanese cuisine, but it is a “quotation” to make better food, and does not give the impression of plagiarism.
It has been praised since its opening by faithfully reproducing our taste, but nevertheless, the effort of the kitchen team, which does not stop and continues to try new things, and strictly accepts and evolves good things, is the unrivaled strength of Onjieum. I think.
