Gion Yorozuya
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Restaurant
Gion Yorozuya, located in a small alley on Gion Shijo Street, which is often visited by tourists, is an old udon shop that has been in business for 80 years. As old as Gion Street itself, the shop's exterior looks aged but completely harmonizes with the street, without feeling out of place. Unlike its exterior, the interior of the shop is kept clean, and they carefully make their broth using selected ingredients. There's a reason why a long queue forms around the shop around lunchtime. Kyoto is known for its high-quality Kyo-yasai (Kyoto vegetables), and Yorozuya's specialty, Kujo-negi Ankake Udon, is made with an abundance of Kujo green onions, producing a cool and deep flavor of the broth. Expensive and fancy Kyoto cuisine is good, but a warm bowl of udon stays in the memory for a long time.
