Library of Jeju miracle
Jeju, Jeju • Culture

In 2003, the Miracle Library initiative started as a civic movement by MBC TV and civic groups to build libraries in small cities across the country, including Suncheon, Jeongeup, Jinhae, Gimhae, and others, resulting in a total of 11 libraries. Jeju Island saw the construction of one Miracle Library in both Jeju City and Seogwipo City.
The library, nestled within a quiet residential area, offers decent accessibility and a tranquil environment. The building features an irregular shape with a triangular sloped roof that collects rainwater, demonstrating its use of sustainable practices. Constructed from concrete, the library reduces the number of pillars by interweaving beams into a lattice structure, reminiscent of a triangular waffle pattern that mirrors the library's triangular floor plan. The design includes partially protruding entrances, a multipurpose room, and various reading rooms, with a courtyard to the east.
Visitors can follow paths from the entrance to the interior or the courtyard. Vertical circulation connecting the two floors serves as administrative space, restricting public access to the second floor.
The reading rooms boast two-story high ceilings and east-facing curtain walls to maximize natural light, supplemented by two skylights. The library also features semicircular reading rooms, a section for infants, and a picture book area. The largest reading room connects to various spaces of different sizes, encouraging diverse activities among children.
