Shinhan EX:PACE
Jung-gu, Seoul
Shinhan's latest open lounge has found its place in Myeongdong, a commercial area densely populated with commercial streets near Myeongdong Station. This location used to be Shinhan Bank's Myeongdong Station branch at the corner where Myeongdong 8-gil meets Myeongdong 6-gil before it was remodeled. The purpose of this project was for Shinhan Bank to establish a building that represents its identity amidst the rapidly changing commercial streets by offering various financial information and services. The 6th floor introduces 'Sol Lounge,' a space where many people can freely use facilities including workspaces, open spaces, meeting rooms, and resting areas. Despite many banking services moving to non-face-to-face solutions, Shinhan Bank is making various attempts to communicate with its customers. The building first surprises visitors with its beautiful glass curves. The materiality felt from the glass used in building facades is far from beautiful curves, but this building, located in Myeongdong, is dynamically wrinkled for a reason. Despite fewer people compared to its heyday as a fashion mecca, Myeongdong still sees many visitors. The 'metaphorical separation' needed from numerous surrounding commercial facilities is not about ignoring the overall context but about maintaining a controlled complexity. Studio Loco's intention was for the building to be remembered not as a specific shape but as a metaphor and symbol.
