Old House of Choe Sunu in Seongbuk-dong
Seongbuk-gu, Seoul • Culture
Choi Soon-woo's old house, saved from demolition by the citizens. While it was almost demolished, this Hanok (traditional Korean house) was preserved thanks to the sponsorship of the citizens. Tea is sold here, allowing visitors to enjoy a friendly tea time against the backdrop of a Hanok on a sunny day. Although I have never deeply learned about Hanok, the greatest charm of Hanok is undoubtedly its 'soft beauty.' I think the warmth of Hanok, placed between the excessive flamboyance of traditional Chinese architecture and the tense coldness of Japanese traditional architecture, serves as an outstanding value for human habitation. The warmth continues from the entrance to the yard, back road, and garden. As a result, my steps become lighter as if I'm visiting a neighbor's house I used to frequent.
