Experiencing a stay in a space blessed with Jeju's nature… is something you'll want to try. Podo Hotel, 2001, by Jun Itami. Words as concepts of space - Ensnared, Hidden, Liberated, Open, Closed, Coexisting. While visualizing these, my primary concern was harmony with the terrain and positioning that doesn't conflict with it. -Jun Itami- 'Podo Hotel' is a hotel built within the Biotopia complex in 2001, not far from the previously introduced 'Pheonix Public/Members' Golf Clubhouse.' The building is a unique single-story hotel whose roof, when viewed from above, resembles a cluster of grapes, imitating Jeju's mountains, houses, or Jeju's oreum. The hotel's layout is organized like a traditional Jeju Folk House, where a central passage acts as a village path. In the lobby, looking at the model of the building, one can see that 26 rooms are arranged around the corridor that serves as a path. Entry leads past the front desk and restaurant, down the hallway where rooms are located on both sides, with access restricted to guests only. Bringing nature into the hotel in a way not seen in other buildings, zoning with a twisted central axis creates gaps between spaces, and through these open gaps, outside views are pulled in, allowing for unexpected natural sights from outside the hotel. The ceiling, similar to the Pheonix Public Golf Clubhouse, is simplified to express rafters. Interior finishes primarily include iron sheets and wood, and the two pillars in front of the main entrance contrast rough and smooth textures with stone, iron sheets, and wood. Inside the hotel, there's 'Gallery Soy,' located underground, which is open for viewing even to non-guests.
