Magok Square
Magok, Seoul • Park

"The Dynamism that Shakes the City" - Magok Central Plaza - Famed architect Tadao Ando believes that architecture should become a part of the city's identity, exploding with power in various locations to breathe life into the city, much like urban guerillas setting booby traps to shake up the city. - If Space K has come onto the scene as solid, erupting from the ground to shake the city, then 'Magok Central Plaza' digs into the earth as void, dynamically making the ground come alive. - This place, home to Seoul Botanic Park, LG Arts Center Seoul, Space K, and the Magok Plaza being introduced today, is the Magok district. Spearheaded by the city of Seoul for the revitalization of the southwestern regions, this planned new city features a typical grid city structure. - Therefore, walking through the city, the neatly cut tofu-like buildings and those lining the streets make the city seem desolate. Only from Seoul Botanic Park to Magok Haru Park, the green axis cutting through the city, and the vertical axis starting from Space K, where they meet at LG Arts Center, does it seem to shake the straight-laced nature of the city, though not significantly so. - Located at the heart of the Magok district, crossed by Subway Lines 5 and 9 and the Airport Railroad, Magok Plaza serves as a gateway for foreign businesspeople setting foot in Korea and others from different regions heading to Seoul Botanic Park, LG Arts Center, and Space K. - The sense of obligation that such a space must carry and the gestures the plaza makes to fulfill this are quite interesting. - Magok Plaza is situated along the green axis that runs from Magok Haru Park to Seoul Botanic Park. Thus, alongside stairs that naturally continue the green axis underground, a pedestrian bridge prevents the flow from being interrupted, guiding both above and below ground smoothly. - The underground plaza, hidden by buildings aloft, feels as though it is above ground, and the grass roofs lifted high with stairs wrapped around in curves breathe energy into the plaza and beyond into the city. - The open public square, accessible to anyone, holds the potential for various events, and this potential space being the gateway to Magok new city raises curiosity about how much dynamism it will bring to shake the city. - Architecture: URIDO Architects Office Photos, Text: Hyogeun Shin (@_hyogeun_) #A_Space_That_Provides_A_Good_Experience Seoul, Gangseo-gu, Magok Central 5-ro 9
