The Book Society, a bookstore and project space, was opened in 2010 by Mr. Im Gyeong-yong, who worked at The Books at Art Sonje Center, and Ms. Koo Jeong-yeon, a curator at Zero One Design Center. The place handles independent publications, which means it often faces operational challenges due to low profitability. However, they believe that providing independent publications can contribute positively to society, however small that contribution might be.

Initially passing through Sangsu-dong and Hapjeong-dong before settling in Tongui-dong, they wanted to create furniture with consistency. Since the building is newly constructed, they aimed to give a perception of a 'building within a building.' Collaborating with architects and designers, they painted various pieces of furniture yellow, adding a sense of unity to the space and creating areas where people can sit and hold book launches while storing books.

The logo color of The Book Society was purple, but they found the complementary yellow intriguing.

They have been active for more than 10 years, participating in several book fairs and art events, importing books from various countries. Especially since the book market is not very active in Southeast Asia, importing books was challenging but made possible through publishers met at book fairs.

Among the diverse topics, a photo book dealing with what is left after the Olympics caught their eye. It highlighted the aftermath, focusing on unused facilities and waste, shedding light on another side of the Olympics.

So, is it worth a visit? Although the location is not optimal, it is recommended for those who enjoy independent bookstores. The pleasure of seeing books from various countries is quite special.
