In Yamashina, just one station east of Kyoto, lies the Tonkatsu shop Kawamura. Here, you can order Tonkatsu from about 4-5 different pork breeds, and there are also about four cuts available for order. The place takes its Tonkatsu seriously. Particularly outstanding are the super special and special loins; the mature pork they use lives up to the establishment's name, offering a truly pleasant meat aroma and texture similar to eating tenderloin with excellent marbling. Along with a set meal comes really great Donjiru (pork soup) and rice, and a meat stew side dish that was also fantastic. The language barrier exists as there is no foreign language menu, but for those serious about Tonkatsu, a visit is highly recommended.
