Owol School
Chuncheon-si, Gangwon • Cafe
Once a small school that served as a learning center for local residents for 15 years after its opening in 1969, the closed school has transformed into a complex cultural space with a cafe, restaurant, and stay facilities operating together. The place is remembered for its excellent natural lighting; the interior, significantly different from the exterior, is imbued with wood and warm tones. The cafe is spacious with plenty of tables, although many chairs lack back support. There's a restaurant that operates like an annex on the left side of the cafe, while on the right, a door leads to the stay facilities. The staff were very friendly, and the location, famous as a fall foliage spot, also harmonizes with the freshness of spring and summer, making it suitable for families with young children and as a coffee date spot in Chuncheon.
As for the coffee, you can choose between two types of beans. I ordered an Americano with a blend that had a fruity acidity and citrusy feel. The music at Owool School is characterized by gentle instrumental pieces. Having read a review by someone who stayed overnight, it seems the music chosen for the stay perfectly complements the space, contributing to a peaceful day. The importance placed on music, not just in the cafe and restaurant but also for the stay facilities, is a positive aspect, and it's hoped this unique musical identity is preserved for a long time.
