Kazariya
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Cafe
Kazariya, one of two historic mochi shops located right in front of Imamiya Shrine in Japan, has been selling mochi at this location for over 400 years, while the shop across the street boasts a history of nearly 1000 years. Being some of the oldest mochi shops not just in Kyoto, but in all of Japan, both shops facing each other offer a similar ambience and taste despite serving the same menu. It's generally recommended to choose the shop with the shorter wait time as both tend to have queues. Aburimochi, a simple menu item, consists of freshly grilled mochi brushed with a white miso sauce and tastes somewhat similar to injeolmi (a type of Korean rice cake). Even for someone who generally doesn't favor dango varieties, it was delicious. The tea served alongside the freshly grilled mochi is also very tasty. Located somewhat far from downtown Kyoto (about an hour by bus), it's more recommended for those who have visited Kyoto several times rather than first-time visitors.
