Ping Pong 129
Central and Western District, Hong Kong Island • Bar
'Ping Pong 129' is a gin-tonic specialty bar created from a renovated table tennis hall. Located at 129 Second Street, Sai Ying Pun, it still hangs the sign for the ping pong hall, 乒乓城 (Ping Pong City), making it unimaginable for passersby to think of it as a bar. It exudes a vibe like a secret hideout of the resistance at night, but since the rear of the building is on the first floor, it is well lit by sunlight during the day. Sai Ying Pun itself is built on a slope, so there are many such style buildings in the area. Initially a local bar where locals would grab a drink after work, Ping Pong 129 has become one of the hottest bars in Hong Kong due to its unique concept. It is known as the place that introduced Spanish gin-tonic to Hong Kong for the first time, and true to its specialty, it deals with all kinds of gin-tonic drinks. The neon sign on the bar wall that reads '鍛鍊身體' (Temper the Body) oddly reminds one of the streets of Hong Kong at night. It is said that this phrase has been on the wall since its table tennis hall days, preserving it might be intended to inherit the spirit of the table tennis hall that one should build the body first if they want to drink for a long time.
