Central-Mid-Levels Escalators
Central and Western District, Hong Kong Island • Entertainment
The world's longest outdoor escalator, forming the core of Soho, the prime spot in Central, spans a length of 800m, connecting slopes. Constructed in 1994 at a cost of around 30 billion KRW for the convenience of Hong Kong's residents commuting, it has since become a staple. While Hong Kong's super-rich built grand mansions in the cool highlands to escape the humidity and heat, the younger elites flocked to the high-rise apartments on the steep hills known as Mid-Levels. Centered around this area, trendy cafes and restaurant streets emerged, influencing the commercial zone of Old Town Central below. The Mid-Level Escalators, also a filming location for the movie 'Chungking Express', where Wang Fei secretly glanced at Leung Chiu-wai, consist of 20 escalators connected and operate upwards from 10:20 AM until midnight, serving early morning down-bound travelers. Key points in Central, like Gage Street and Lyndhurst Terrace, are penetrated, making it vital for tourists.
