A large abandoned cold storage warehouse in Gujwa-eup, Jeju, was planned and successfully converted into a cafe by the design group Intaideul in a way of regenerative architecture.
Regenerative architecture, in simple terms, is a method that uses fewer materials and maximizes the use of remaining structures. It aims for eco-friendly construction by minimizing construction waste and purchasing materials during the demolition and construction process.
Cafe Costeno stands as a positive example of creating a new space with environmental impact considerations. It shows overwhelming interior spatial sense and beauty under its name, which means 'coastal'.
The ceiling is so high that it easily exceeds the height of three adult men. The scale, rarely seen in ordinary spaces, is an invitation to a different world. The shop features a sandy beach in front of the store, landscaping representing Jeju, and square windows bringing in the outside scenery.
The overall interior emphasizes the straightness of the lines. Architectural elements made by humans are minimalistic and achromatic, while the vivid colors and shapes of natural objects are fully highlighted.
Costeno utilizes two buildings. The expression wrapping the ceiling like aluminum foil (photo 1) provides an experience as if entering into a giant contemporary art scene.
'Coastal', as Costeno means, delivers creative imagery from the rooftop. The rough concrete surfaces in the outdoor space allow for enjoying the sea.
The environmental significance of regenerative architecture and the unique spatial experience is what makes cafe Costeno, a place abutting against the sea.
