Muroi
Seogwipo-si, Jeju • Cafe
The natural landscape captured in architecture. With a black drawing paper as a background, the nature of Jeju has been transferred to a real space. Cafe Muroi draws an architectural landscape with a sense of depth and abstractness, with a black wall holding small island-like gardens in front of it. Located in Donggwang Village, Muroi incorporates the village's characteristic of being enveloped in dense fog into the space's name. - Three black buildings divided into sections welcome us. The plants against the dark background become subjects, flaunting the vigor of a fresh summer. The existence shining under the sunlight is akin to a protagonist on stage. The view inside and outside shared through the glass windows gives a sense of openness connected to nature. Entering the tall black buildings feels like walking into a contemporary art museum; however, the items placed on the floor are stones, wood, and jars, creating an identity of the space by harmonizing Jeju's indigenous artifacts with creative sensibility. - The main corridor leading to the seating area induces visual immersion by focusing all senses toward the central vanishing point. The space, painted in gray and brown, seems to emphasize the colors of nature, making the space itself a backdrop. The essence of the experience Muroi offers lies in the garden, inspired by Gotjawal, a word combining 'Got', meaning forest, and 'Jawal', indicating a dense thicket. It represents the coexistence of northern and southern Jeju's ecological communities in one spatial expression. The sound of birds and the unrefined forms of stone and moss facing us. The soft breeze of early summer conveys comfort and leisure to today's time. - A space where the aesthetics of subtraction, minimizing decorations to focus on nature, shines through. We hope you enjoy the creative landscape drawn against the backdrop of the artistic abstraction that black embodies. - Location: 21, Donggwangbongdong-ro, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju.
