The Queen Victoria Building, located opposite the Sydney Town Hall and commonly referred to as QVB, has been praised by designer Pierre Cardin as "the most beautiful shopping center in the world" due to its flamboyant facade and interior. Established in 1898 on a site previously used as a market, the building has served various purposes, including as a hotel and casino after 1959, before being transformed into the current department store format. This change followed a 99-year lease agreement with the Sydney City Council by a Malaysian investor, who put forward $75 million for the renovation. The building, owned by Sydney City Council and leased to the Malaysian entrepreneur, houses over 200 high-end boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. It is renowned for its stained glass decorated staircases and the Royal Clock suspended in the center, which features a figurine parade at every hour. Additionally, notable are the statues of Queen Victoria and her dog Islay, believed to bring luck, located in front of the building. The building's Romanesque style, inspired by Byzantine palaces, is highlighted by the 21 large and small domes adorning its roof. A special experience is guaranteed just by riding the over 100-year-old elevator throughout the building, even without the intention to purchase anything.
