Gangneung si, Gangwon • Restaurant
Focusing on the taste, I visited what seemed to be a restaurant destined to be delicious across from the Chodang Sundubu Village bus stop (Gangneung High School), a 10-minute taxi ride from Gangneung Station. The place had a unique charm, resembling a Japanese detached house with a Hanok-style roof, and a warm yellow light visible through the windows and blinds. Behind its inviting appearance was a YEBISU beer sign, hinting at its culinary delights. Despite being near the East Sea, the sea's freshness was a given. The main dish, kaisendon, though not entirely sourced from the nearby waters, represented a perfect choice for my preference for neat Japanese-style meals. However, with the majority of establishments in Chodang Sundubu Village being tofu restaurants, my curiosity for kaisendon had to wait until the next day. Arriving 30 minutes before opening time the following morning, I managed to secure a reservation amidst a sizeable queue, signaling the restaurant's popularity, characterized by a nearly full house during mealtime. The interior ambiance followed the exterior's warm mood, enriched by items like lamps and picture frames adding a Japanese touch. The appealing presentation of the kaisendon, with its colorful array of sashimi topped with salmon roe, was not only a feast for the eyes but also for the palate, as evidenced by my nearly instant consumption. The lack of photos of the space suggests a reason to visit again.
