Franken Ramen
Osaka Prefecture, Japan • Restaurant
While planning a trip to Japan, I stumbled upon ramen topped with cake. Out of curiosity, I visited the place to see if it's real. Indeed, it is. They have a signature dish called Amakara Miso Ramen, a spicy miso ramen topped with something sweet. Previously, they topped it with soft ice cream. Today, it seems the soft ice cream topping has made a comeback.
Menu:
The cake tastes just like old-fashioned cake, not as bad as its shocking appearance might suggest. The cream makes the ramen broth smoother, and the cake, soaked in the broth, creates a unique flavor. Personally, I found the ramen flavor too strong, overshadowing the cake. However, it's intriguing enough to save and try, making it a successful dish. The soft ice cream they're offering this season is even more intriguing.
There's no dumplings on the side; only fried rice is offered. Surprisingly, the fried rice is quite good. Some people come here just for the fried rice. The place seems popular for meals, not just because of its unique menu. The ramen itself is a bit salty but not bad. The sweet toppings on this limited menu are perhaps why it's grabbed attention. This limited dish is available until March, so if you're in Japan before that, it might be fun to try it out for the experience.
