Ichimonjiya Wasuke
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Cafe
Ichimonjiyasuke (Ichimonji), in business for 25 generations since its opening in 1001, is truly a thousand-year-old shop. Having maintained its position for over 1020 years, it sells Aburi mochi, grilled rice cakes. It's astonishing, almost miraculous, that it has continued from around the Goryeo Dynasty to the present.
The menu features Aburi mochi, rice cakes grilled over charcoal. The cakes are skewered on bamboo, coated with bean powder, and grilled. Then they are topped with a sweet white miso sauce. The chewy texture of the rice cake combined with the sweet and salty miso sauce keeps people coming back for more. The charred and pressed texture from the charcoal adds to the fun.
Right in front, there's a competitor with the same menu, Kazariya, which is about 400 years old. Both the menu and prices, as well as the operating hours, are the same. Ichimonji prides itself on the taste and grilling technique, while Kazariya boasts their sweet miso sauce. For those curious about Kazariya, check out the previous posts!
