SARAI
Central, Singapore • Restaurant
Fine Thai restaurant Sarai has recently opened at Tanglin Mall, helmed Chef Chimkit Khamphuang with more than 27 years of culinary experience. So you can expect the menu to reflect her Thai heritage with traditional Thai flavours, even though they are served with a modern presentation.
🔸
They have ala carte menu, but most popular here are their set menu starting at just $68 for lunch and $88 for dinner.
🔸
Regardless of which set menu you pick, you start with an amuse bouche called Plaa Heng Tang Mo ปลาแหง้ แตงโม, a sweet and savoury snack consisting of watermelon with toasted coconut and smoked fish. This is followed by Mieng Makเมยงีหมาก, with dried prawns and wild ginger on betel leaves; and Puu Sorn Glin ปซูอน่ กลนิ, which is crab meat with picked garlic and crunchy rice.
🔸
There are some choices to make for the main courses, and some of my favourites include the Gaeng Raweng Nuea แกงระแวงเนอ, with wagyu in a thick Thai green curry sauce, served dry. I also liked the Yum Hed Goong Yang ยาเห็ดกงแุ้ มนา่ ยาง, which is grilled river prawns with mushroom in a tom-yum-like gravy.
🔸
The meal ends with taro desserts - Khanom Mor Gaeng ขนมหมอ้ แกง, which is baked taro custard; and Peuak Rang Nok เผอื กรง ั นก taro served like a bird's nest.
