Kyoto Gyoen National Garden
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Park
An expansive park where you can stroll under the cherry blossom rain, Kyoto Gyoen encompasses the 630,000 square meters surrounding the Kyoto Imperial Palace, where emperors lived and worked for over 500 years. Originally home to the high-ranking officials' residences around the Imperial Palace, it was demolished after the capital moved and opened to the public as a national park in 1949. Visiting in spring when the plum and cherry blossoms bloom or in autumn to see the spectacular colors of the leaves is highly recommended. The park, dense with numerous trees, includes the former Imperial Palace, Kyoto Gosho, the Palace's internal administrations, the Imperial Guard headquarters, and many old mansions. There are people who enjoy picnics on the grass lawns and also those who come to take wedding pictures, making it a popular spot among both locals and tourists.
