Hirano Shrine
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Entertainment
Let's enjoy the cherry blossom viewing just like in the animations. This shrine, relocated from Nara along with the Heian capital relocation, boasts a long history. In the past, it was a prestigious shrine overseeing the imperial family's ceremonies.. It is famous for its beautiful cherry blossom trees during the cherry blossom season. There are 50 types of cherry blossoms and 400 trees planted. Especially, the nighttime light-up has been continuing for 400 years since the Edo period, which makes it understandable why the term 'Hirano's night cherry blossoms' came to be. During the cherry blossom festival period, it's a place where you can experience Japan's unique cherry blossom festival atmosphere with various Japanese-style food stalls (Yatai). You can enjoy the atmosphere that you have only seen in animations or movies. In particular, one of the four deities worshipped at this shrine is Imaki and there is a theory that Imaki was King Seong of Baekje. It's a small temple that's not necessarily worth visiting in other seasons, but highly recommended during the cherry blossom season!
