Nanzen-ji Temple
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Entertainment
Right here is the Surak photo seen on Instagram! Nanzenji, one of the most famous tourist spots in Kyoto, was established as a temple in 1291 after receiving donation of an imperial villa from the emperor. Most buildings at Nanzenji are designated as Japan's national treasures and important cultural properties, and it is said that some of the printing plates of the Goryeo Dynasty's Jikji are stored here. One of the most famous places in Nanzenji is the Suirokaku. It was built during the Meiji era to bring water from rivers and lakes to downtown Kyoto. The space between the red brick pillars is a major photo spot for many people. Beyond the Suirokaku, there are many attractions such as the massive 22-meter-tall Sanmon, one of Japan's three greatest gates, and the Hojo, a national treasure of Japan. Entrance to the Nanzenji precincts is free, but there are admission fees for entering places like Sanmon, Hojoteien, and Nanzenin. While it might not be necessary to enter these if you have visited or plan to visit other temples, exploring these sites at Nanzenji can also make for a good experience if your schedule is tight.
