Saryo Housen
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Cafe
Experience the true essence of old Japan at the traditional tea house Saryo Hosen, where you can enjoy Japanese traditional desserts and tea. Located in a Japanese traditional house over 100 years old, it enriches the Kyoto atmosphere. If you visit in the morning, you can experience the sunlight streaming quietly through the tatami room. The most famous menu item is warabimochi! I ordered warabimochi without even looking at the menu.
Warabimochi
A traditional dessert made only with bracken starch, sugar, and water. The charm of warabimochi lies more in its texture than its taste. The sensation of it smoothly sliding down your throat can be fun and interesting for some, but for others, it might just be sweet snot. Personally, I really enjoyed the texture of the warabimochi here. Black sugar syrup is available, but try one without it first to fully experience the charm of the mochi. Since it is only made with natural ingredients, it tends to harden over time, so it's better to eat it quickly.
As it loses elasticity over time, it is made immediately upon order, so it might take some time. Additionally, the charm of the sugar-preserved black beans that come with tea is also noteworthy.
You can also purchase Japanese confectionary at the entrance. It takes some time to prepare and pack after ordering, so if you intend to buy, it might be good to order in advance!
