Ginkaku-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion, contrasts its name by not being covered in silver, unlike its counterpart, Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Originally intended to be coated in silver, financial difficulties and the early death of its patron, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, left it in its iconic unfinished state. The temple complex, built in 1482, includes six temple buildings, a moss garden, and a sand garden, each element showcasing restrained beauty and metaphorical representations through its meticulously designed landscapes and architectures. It symbolizes the essence of Wabi-Sabi, embracing imperfection and simplicity. A visit offers a serene journey through meticulously cared-for gardens, leading to a viewpoint overlooking Kyoto.
