Pocchiri
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan • Shop

Before traveling to Japan, I was considering what to buy as souvenirs for my acquaintances and decided on coin purses and handkerchiefs, having great expectations. The 'Pottiri' store, a coin purse specialty shop, can be found by exiting through Gate 7 of Gion-Shijo Station, walking towards Yasaka Shrine with the Kamo River behind you. A Japanese traditional wallet named 'Gamaguchi', which is opened and closed with a clasp at the top, is suitable for a country like Japan where coins are frequently used. It is said to bring wealth and good fortune, making it popular as a gift. Pottiri is a specialist in making Gamaguchi, from planning to production, all handcrafted by artisans. Apart from coin purses, you can also find Gamaguchi-style bags, glasses cases, and more in the store, mainly in stripes or dots pattern, but also featuring flowers or patterns that embody Japan's traditional culture, making it difficult to choose. There are also beads and accessories for sale at the counter, which can be used to add a point to the simple fabric design of Gamaguchi, and seem to be a popular purchase. If you buy accessories with Gamaguchi, the staff will attach them for you right after payment. Priced at 20,000 to 30,000 won, it's not cheap but is a souvenir that would please anyone. If you're looking for a souvenir that encapsulates the essence of Japan and is also practical, Pottiri is recommended.
