Sinyet chatjip (Shin Tea House)
Jongno-gu, Seoul • Cafe
Shinyeot Tea House is a traditional cafe where you can enjoy sweet red-bean porridge and Korean traditional sweets. The name itself, which means 'new old tea house,' is an interesting oxymoron. The 30-year tradition is immediately apparent in the interior decor, which exudes experience and history, from stone lanterns to lanterns, butterfly cabinets, folding screens, jars, wooden utensils, and more. Several kinds of fruit trees, whose names are unknown, also grow in the courtyard, bathed in sunlight, giving the place a feel of a small secret garden. The price of the sweet red-bean porridge is 9,000 won, which might seem a bit expensive, but considering the prices in this neighborhood, it doesn't seem too exorbitant. If two people order the 3,000 won traditional Korean sweets and sweet red-bean porridge respectively, they can roughly match the price of an average cafe. It operates from 11:00 am to 9:30 pm.
