Starville
Seogwipo-si, Jeju • Hotel
One day, as I was checking out, I accidentally overheard someone say, 'Ah, I had a good time. Now let's go home and rest.' Hotels have started to change at some point. They've become more like playgrounds than places to rest, emphasizing content similar to theme parks. Consequently, there's been a growing longing for spaces dedicated solely to 'rest,' where doing nothing is perfectly fine and one isn't chased by time but can let it flow freely. This is, of course, a personal perspective.
That's why Starville has deeply resonated with me. Every room is shaped like a tent, in a glamping style. Winds may cause some noise due to the tent structure, but even that feels like part of the charm. The best part is being in the middle of nowhere, isolated in the mountains. It's serene and silent. Opening the door(?!), you're greeted by a pond with ducks swimming leisurely. Sometimes, they even walk up to the rooms. Watching the sunset behind the pond while enjoying a barbecue and seeing the glittering pond at breakfast is sublime.
During my stay, the weather was exceptionally refreshing. Spending time on the hammock in the yard or sitting in a chair reading made me appreciate life.
As mentioned, there's nothing around, so Starville has a specialized in-room service, from beverage & snack vending machines to alcohol, with beers starting from around 8,000 won and wines from 70,000 won. It's worth trying a drink here. Be cautious, as the smell of the forest coming in with a sip could make the alcohol feel as light as water.
If you find yourself with time to spare, the outdoor pool is a great destination, offering a foreign country vibe. Going in and out of the water after lounging on the sunbed is indescribable. Writing this makes me want to return.
The name 'Starville' isn't for no reason. At night, just look up at the sky. You can directly witness a shower of stars, a precious experience. Even more, at 9 PM, there's a star observation time. Staff bring out telescopes to view stars up close. Initially, I wasn't too impressed, but rushing to it first... (I would have regretted not seeing it).
The two days spent here are unforgettable. It was a rare moment to focus solely on rest, away from daily tasks and intrusive thoughts. Some might question spending time at one spot when in Jeju, but stepping into this place will erase any desire to visit crowded areas. It's a brief peace amid a life resembling warfare.
At Starville, instead of saying, 'Now, let's go home and rest,' you'll leave saying, 'I rested well.' Especially for those who need a pause nowadays. Life is long; there's no rush. Sometimes, it's necessary to hit the pause button.
