🍽 The endless search for the real tonkatsu gem.
A tonkatsu restaurant, Gwangmyeong Tonkatsu, has been acknowledged by many who cherish tonkatsu but hasn't gained significant fame due to its erratic operating hours and the owner's stubbornness for quality. It has now relocated from Gwangmyeong to Hapjeong. Although operating hours are posted, checking Instagram is a must. But it's hard to hold a grudge. Only when the quality of the tonkatsu meets the owner's standards do doors open for business.
✔️Menu
There are three menus: Sangros, Ros, and Hire. The day I went, there was an incident, and they opened an hour late. No surprise, Sangros was unavailable. For some reason, I was craving Hire that day and ordered it. Ordering tonkatsu comes with miso soup and green onion salad. The charm of this green onion salad cannot be ignored.
✔️Hirekatsu
Ah, this is what tonkatsu is supposed to be... It makes me wonder if I'm genuinely eating pork. The meaty aroma that arises, its tenderness, and the rich umami flavor are astonishing. Lightly peppered and dipped in a pinch of salt, it rivals beef steak.
As it has moved to Hapjeong and thus became more accessible, it's a place tonkatsu lovers must visit before it becomes even more famous. As mentioned initially, there might be unexpected closures or early endings. Instagram check is mandatory before visiting!
